About 925 Silver

What is 925 Silver?

925 silver, as its name suggests, is made with 92.5% silver (extracted from a silver ore) and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. 925 silver is commonly known as “Sterling Silver”. Silver is a naturally soft and malleable metal, therefore is impractical to be made into sophisticated shapes in its purest form. That said, we stock a few simple earrings made with pure 99.9% silver. (Yes, we’re serious about silver jewellery!) The addition of copper makes silver harder and easier to shape, which is more suitable for jewellery making.

What are the benefits of using 925 Silver for earrings?

We love silver as the raw material for earrings for the following reasons:
♡ It’s beautiful!
♡ It’s durable and rust-resistant. Learn how to care for silver.
♡ It’s less prone to skin allergies (pure silver is generally non-allergenic, however, the presence of other metals in 925 silver may cause allergic reactions to highly sensitive skins).
♡ It’s more abundant than other rare metals such as gold and platinum, therefore more affordable in price.

Why can you have gold and rose gold colours for 925 silver jewellery?

We have 925 silver jewellery in gold and rose gold colour, which is achieved through a chemical process called “electroplating”. This is a process where the jeweller adds a thin coat of gold or rose gold to the surface of the 925 silver to make it appear in a gold or rose gold colour.

Does 925 silver tarnish?

Unfortunately, yes. 925 silver oxidises and turns black over time. However, with a bit of care, 925 silver jewellery lasts much longer than those made with copper, bronze or brass.
